Gateshead Out Of Hours Service

The Gateshead Out Of Hours service provides opportunities for people who live in the borough of Gateshead to have somewhere to go, to meet other people, share in interesting and fun activities and receive support and advice from dedicated staff.

This service as its name implies is open at times when other statutory and voluntary sector services are closed. These are times when people who suffer from mental ill health often feel lonely, isolated and depressed with nothing to give them positive things to do or be a part of.

The service is open on three days each week. On Thursdays from 4.30 to 7.30pm as well as on Saturdays and Sundays from 12noon to 4.30pm. The service has a capacity to have a maximum of 25 people in the building during a session. This is due to the staffing levels we are able to have during these times.

During these times there are always two members of staff on duty. These staff will provide food for service users for a small cost during each session. They also with the help of service users arrange activities and competitions to provide fun and a chance to do things together in groups sometimes with prizes awarded for things that have been achieved.

The service provides opportunities for people to learn new skills from high tech things like IT use to traditional abilities such as knitting and gardening. We have the use of equipment and facilities within the premises we use to be able to do these things.

The staff also provide support to service users to help and advise them with any issues that are causing them concern or difficulties in their lives. This support is provided in one to one support work meetings which take place during the sessions. Staff will develop a support plan for each service user which will set out clear and achievable goals for the person concerned and identify how these will be met as well as who will be involved.

There are regular service user meetings when people who come to the service can have their say in what is provided, what they would like to see done differently or put across new ideas. These take place once every two months and are attended by the service manager who will listen to what service users are saying and work with them and the staff to look at ways of making ideas a reality.

This service provides people with the chance to relax, have fun, learn new things, meet new people, help others and get help or support for themselves. This is all done in a big, bright, warm and welcoming centre in the Bensham area of Gateshead.
